# Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is making a website easy for AI assistants and AI search features, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews, to find, understand, and cite when they answer people's questions.

Also called: AEO, Generative engine optimization, GEO, AI search optimization, LLM SEO.

## In short

- AEO aims to get your site **cited in AI answers**, as well as ranked in a list of links.
- It builds on SEO. Pages that rank and read well are the ones AI tools tend to draw from.
- Clear, direct answers, crawlable HTML, structured data, and consistent facts help most.
- No one can guarantee AI citations. Measure referrals and spot checks, and be wary of anyone who promises results.

## What answer engines are

An answer engine replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode all work this way. They search the web, read a handful of pages, and write a summary, often with links to the sources they used.

That changes what winning looks like. In classic search, you want to be the first blue link. In an AI answer, you want to be one of the sources the answer relies on, and to have your product or company named accurately. Researchers proposed the name generative engine optimization (GEO) for this in 2023. AEO and GEO are used for roughly the same idea.

## AEO and SEO

**Diagram: What changes and what stays.**

**Classic SEO**
- Goal: rank high in a list of links
- Success: clicks to your page
- Measured in rankings and traffic
- Built on relevance, links, and quality

**Answer engine optimization**
- Goal: be cited in the written answer
- Success: mentions, citations, referrals
- Measured by spot checks and referrals
- Built on the same foundations, plus clarity

_The two overlap more than the new names suggest. Google has said there is nothing extra required to appear in AI Overviews beyond its normal search guidance._

Most answer engines rely on a search index to find pages, either their own or a partner's. So the basics still apply: pages need to be crawlable, indexed, fast, and useful. AEO adds an emphasis on writing that can be quoted and facts that are easy to extract.

## What helps a site get cited

- **Answer the question first.** Put a plain, self-contained answer at the top of the page, then the detail. A sentence that stands on its own is easy to quote.
- **Use the words people ask in.** Headings phrased as the questions people actually type or say.
- **Serve real HTML.** Content that only appears after JavaScript runs may be missed by some crawlers. Server rendering, as in [Next.js](https://www.choie.co/glossary/nextjs), avoids the problem.
- **Add structured data.** Schema.org markup such as Organization, Article, FAQPage, and DefinedTerm states facts in a form machines read reliably.
- **Keep facts consistent.** Your prices, location, and what you do should match across your site, profiles, and directories.
- **Allow the crawlers you want.** Check that robots.txt does not block the AI search crawlers you hope will read your site.

Some sites also publish an [llms.txt](https://www.choie.co/glossary/llms-txt) file, a Markdown summary meant for language models. It is cheap to add, but treat it as a helpful extra rather than a ranking lever.

> **Be the source, not the summary.** Pages with original information, such as your real prices, your process, or data you collected, give an answer engine a reason to cite you rather than a page that repeats what everyone else says. Choie's own site states its prices and its week-by-week [process](https://www.choie.co/process) in plain sentences, facts no other page can supply.

## How to measure it

Measurement is less precise than in classic search. There is no ranking report for AI answers, and the same question can get a different answer each time. A practical approach combines three things.

1. **Referral traffic.** Analytics tools can show visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and similar sources.
2. **Regular spot checks.** Ask the main assistants the questions your customers ask, and note whether and how you are cited.
3. **Search Console.** Google's AI features are included in its search performance reporting, alongside regular results.

## Common mistakes

- **Writing for machines instead of people.** Keyword-stuffed pages read badly to both.
- **Burying the answer.** A long introduction before the actual definition makes the page harder to quote.
- **Inflated claims.** AI tools repeat what they read. Invented numbers or reviews can follow your brand around.
- **Blocking crawlers by accident.** A default rule or a firewall setting can shut out the tools you want to reach.
- **Buying guaranteed placement.** Nobody controls what an answer engine says. Promises of guaranteed citations are a warning sign.

Choie wrote this glossary on these principles: each entry answers its question in the first sentence, carries structured data, and has a plain Markdown version for machines. A well-built [custom website](https://www.choie.co/glossary/custom-website) or [landing page](https://www.choie.co/glossary/landing-page) can do the same.

## Common questions

### Is AEO the same as SEO?

It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Answer engines usually find pages through search indexes, so crawlable, useful, well-structured pages matter for both. AEO adds a focus on clear, quotable answers and consistent facts. When Choie builds a [launch site](/services/launch-sites), the goal is a page that explains the product in one screen, which serves a search result and an AI answer alike.

### What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

They describe the same goal: being found and cited by AI-generated answers. GEO, generative engine optimization, comes from a 2023 research paper, while AEO is the term more common in marketing.

### How do I know if ChatGPT cites my website?

Ask it the questions your customers ask and check the sources it links. Your analytics can also show referral visits from chatgpt.com and other AI tools.

### Does structured data help with AI search?

It helps machines read facts about your pages reliably, such as what a term means or what an organization does. It is not a guarantee of citation, but it removes ambiguity.
